My son was recently a temporary resident at Summit View for wound care. His room was dirty, trash can always full, and room had little gnats flying around. The staff was rude, unfriendly, and unprofessional.
Those with a voice to express displeasure or a phone to call family were safely in their rooms etc. Out of sheer disgust, I finally asked the nurse in charge why one particular woman who looked to be in such discomfort was left in the hard plastic/vinyl chair for over 7 hours. The response I got was "we have to keep a close eye on her".
They sleep in each other's bed and they take their clothes off. They said they can't help it and there's nothing I can do about it. So, sometimes I walk in and sit in a room with 33 naked people. They need to improve on the cleanliness to get rid of the smell and the dirt on the floor. They need to wrap up the tables after lunch, wash the people's hands and change their diapers more than twice a day.
The same goes for the other poor residents who do not have to ability to protest. Unfortunately, this goes on at most non-profit facilities. If your loved one is unable to speak for themselves, you'd better make sure surprise visits are made. The nursing staff is the most important part of what determines the quality of care and comfort of a resident in a nursing home.
